London police form unit to boost protection of Jewish community
London’s Metropolitan Police has established a new specialist unit of 100 additional officers to enhance protection for the Jewish community, according to an official statement published on its website.
The unit will bring together neighbourhood policing teams, specialised security personnel, and counterterrorism officers, with a primary focus on responding to threats and hate-related crimes.
Police said that over the past four weeks, around 50 individuals have been detained across London on suspicion of antisemitic offences, with eight already formally charged.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said the creation of the unit represents a significant step in strengthening security for Jewish communities amid ongoing threats.
Authorities added that while the unit will initially concentrate on tackling antisemitic incidents, its structure could later be adapted to protect other communities experiencing an increase in hate crimes.
