Lukashenko: Belarus open to renewed engagement with Sweden
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has signalled readiness to restore dialogue with Sweden, citing the importance of longstanding bilateral ties in a message marking Sweden’s National Day.
According to the Belarusian state news agency BelTA, Lukashenko congratulated the Swedish people and highlighted shared values between the two nations, while pointing to political obstacles affecting relations.
“Peacefulness and diligence, restraint and tolerance in life, the pursuit of equality and respect for neighbours have become the foundation of your national identity. The same is characteristic of Belarusians. Unfortunately, today these qualities cannot be fully manifested in bilateral relations due to artificial barriers created by certain short-sighted politicians,” the message said.
Lukashenko emphasised that Belarus attaches importance to its historical relationship with Sweden and remains open to resuming a “mutually respectful and equal dialogue” aimed at enhancing security and prosperity in both countries.
He also extended wishes of prosperity and “peaceful skies” to the Swedish people.
