Lukashenko to join Union State Supreme Council session in Moscow

24 February 2026 16:55

Belarusian President and Chairman of the Supreme State Council of the Union State, Aleksandr Lukashenko, is set to attend a session of the Union State Supreme State Council on February 26 in Moscow.

The meeting will cover seven agenda items focused on advancing bilateral integration, Caliber.Az reports via the Belarusian state agency.

Discussions will include the Main Directions for Implementing the Union State Treaty for 2024–2026, as well as plans for a similar framework for 2027–2029.

Other key topics involve launching cross-border commuter passenger services, establishing the Union State Committee on Standardisation and Quality, enhancing cooperation in international justice, and presenting the Union State Award in Literature and Art for 2025–2026.

The Union State is a supranational political and economic union formed by Russia and Belarus to deepen bilateral cooperation and integration across governance, defence, and markets under a treaty first signed in December 1999 and effective from January 2000.

While both members retain full sovereignty and independent memberships in international organisations, the Union State builds common institutions like a Supreme State Council and frameworks aimed at synchronising economic, legal, energy, and customs systems.

It is designed to support unified action in policy areas such as defence, trade, and social rights, though many deeper integration goals have progressed unevenly.
