Magnitude 4 earthquake strikes Russia’s Krasnodar region

A magnitude 4 earthquake struck the village of Gostagayevskaya in Russia’s Krasnodar region on Sept. 17, the regional department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry said.

“At 06:20 Moscow time on Sept. 17, 2026, information was received that a seismic event with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale had occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres in the village of Gostagayevskaya,” the ministry said, as cited by local media.

No complaints had been received from residents, while infrastructure and essential services were operating normally, the authorities said. Law enforcement agencies had also received no complaints from residents.

Social media reports said the tremors were felt in the nearby cities of Anapa and Novorossiysk.

The situation remains under the control of emergency services, according to the authorities.

Earlier on Sept. 17, seismologists recorded magnitude 4.2 tremors near Novorossiysk.

In March, another earthquake measuring 4.4 in magnitude was recorded near Sochi, with its epicenter in the vicinity of the city.
