Media: British PM Starmer challenges Trump’s peace proposals for Ukraine
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has firmly stated that Ukraine must be allowed to determine the terms of any peace deal with Russia, rejecting proposals put forward by US President Donald Trump.
In an interview aboard the Royal Navy’s HMS Prince of Wales, Starmer emphasised that it is Ukraine's decision, not that of other nations, to shape the peace process, Caliber.Az reports per The Daily Telegraph.
He also rejected US suggestions to formally recognise Crimea as part of Russia, urging Moscow to agree to an “unconditional ceasefire.”
“It is Ukraine that must decide on those issues – it’s not for other people to decide on behalf of Ukraine. It is for Ukraine to decide. And Russia must come to the table for that unconditional ceasefire,” Prime Minister said.
He also pushed for US security guarantees to support Western troops deployed in Ukraine, a stance not publicly endorsed by Trump. The UK government has since softened plans for direct military involvement, opting instead to send military trainers.
Despite differences with Washington, Sir Keir reaffirmed the importance of maintaining NATO ties, arguing that Europe should not abandon its alliance with the US.
The debate continues as both Kyiv and Washington discuss a potential peace agreement, with Ukraine insisting that any deal must align with international law and respect its sovereignty, particularly regarding Crimea.
Boris Johnson, former prime minister, also voiced strong opposition to the US-led proposals, questioning what Ukraine would gain after enduring years of resistance.
