Kyodo News: China takes giant leap in robotics with new AI humanoid robot preorder

20 March 2025 12:28

A Chinese robotics startup has begun accepting preorders for its cutting-edge, AI-powered humanoid robot, marking a significant leap forward in the country's robotics sector.

Priced at 199,000 yuan ($27,500), the Dobot Atom robot is equipped with dexterous manipulation and straight-leg walking capabilities. The Shenzhen-based company, Dobot, plans to begin mass production of the robot by mid-year, Caliber.Az reports via Kyodo News.

The Dobot Atom is designed to perform a variety of tasks, including preparing breakfast, pouring milk, toasting bread, and carrying a box, as demonstrated in a promotional video released by the company last week. Standing at 153 centimeters tall and weighing 62 kilograms, the robot combines advanced functionality with a human-like appearance.

Dobot, which was founded in 2015 and has international offices in Japan, Germany, and the United States, is now officially offering the Dobot Atom for preorder sales. The company’s announcement of the robot’s release has generated significant interest, both domestically and internationally.

On the same day, Midea Group, a prominent home appliance giant from Guangdong, unveiled its own humanoid robot prototype. The Midea robot is capable of performing a range of actions, including shaking hands, dancing, opening bottle caps, and driving screws.

The company, which recently acquired a German robotics firm, also showcased its advancements in humanoid robotics. Experts are noting that the launch of these robots signals China's rapid progress in the robotics sector. Ma Jihua, an industry expert, stated that the emergence of humanoid robots "signals that China's related products are rapidly entering an early stage of mass production."

He further added that the prices of these robots are expected to eventually approach those of everyday consumer electronics, such as televisions, in the coming years. "China offers a vast market for robotic applications, with immense potential in areas such as eldercare, children's educational assistance, and household chores," Ma said.

This advancement in robotics comes as China seeks to strengthen its technology sector amid increasing competition with the United States. In February, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with tech entrepreneurs and urged them to "promote the healthy and high-quality development" of China's private sector.

In line with its goals for technological advancement, China’s Premier Li Qiang delivered a government work report earlier this month, stating that the country will focus on improving "self-reliance and strength in science and technology."

The report also outlined China's commitment to "support the extensive application of large-scale AI models" to accelerate the development of intelligent robots and new energy vehicles.
