Media: Chinese citizens barred from buying property in Florida
Florida has been granted the right to enforce a ban on property purchases by Chinese citizens. A federal appeals court has approved the state law.
According to Reuters, the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a law passed in Florida in 2023, which prohibits citizens of the People’s Republic of China who are not permanent U.S. residents from buying land or property in the state.
The law, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, was part of measures aimed at limiting the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the United States.
The lawsuit against the law was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which argued that it discriminates against Asians based on national origin and violates federal foreign investment regulations.
The court carefully reviewed the evidence and ruled that the plaintiffs lacked sufficient grounds to challenge the law, as it applies only to individuals domiciled in China, not those who have long been living in the U.S.
The law prohibits Chinese citizens who do not hold U.S. citizenship or a green card from purchasing property in Florida.
