Media: Lebanese president proposes one-month truce with Israel
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has proposed a one-month truce with Israel, pledging to use the period to achieve the disarmament of the Shiite militia Hezbollah.
The proposal was communicated to Israel through US Ambassador to Lebanon Michael Issa, TASS reports.
According to Aoun, a ceasefire is necessary for the Lebanese army to complete a government-approved plan to seize weapons from all illegal armed groups, emphasising that such an operation cannot be conducted amid ongoing hostilities.
Sources said the president stressed that establishing the state’s monopoly on weapons cannot be completed while Israeli actions continue on land, in the air, and at sea.
On March 9, Aoun expressed readiness to enter direct talks with Israel to develop security measures that could end aggression and occupation.
He also noted that Hezbollah has drawn Lebanon into a regional conflict, disregarding the will of the majority of citizens weary of war and its consequences.
