Media: Mediators weigh allowing Hamas supporters to retain light arms
Talks in Cairo have touched on the possibility of allowing Hamas supporters in Gaza to temporarily retain light weapons as part of a broader plan to restore stability in the enclave, according to Sky News Arabia.
The discussions, involving representatives from Egypt and Qatar who are mediating indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, include “consideration of a proposal to permit members of the movement to hold on to light arms for a limited period”.
Under the arrangement being examined, Hamas fighters would eventually hand over all remaining light weapons to an international security force that is expected to be deployed in Gaza.
The planned deployment forms part of a proposal presented by US President Donald Trump aimed at stabilising the territory following months of conflict.
The UN Security Council has approved a US-drafted resolution endorsing Trump’s 20-point stabilisation plan for Gaza, including the creation of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF). Thirteen members voted in favour, while Russia and China abstained.
The ISF, to be staffed by contributors the US has not yet named, would work with Israel, Egypt and a newly vetted Palestinian police force to secure border areas and support the permanent disarmament of non-state armed groups.
A transitional governance body, the Board of Peace, will oversee reconstruction and humanitarian coordination through a World Bank-backed trust fund.
Hamas rejected the resolution, saying it imposes an “international guardianship mechanism” and compromises Palestinian rights. The Palestinian Authority welcomed the council’s decision and urged swift implementation.
