Media: One of Russia’s largest oil refineries on fire in Yaroslavl PHOTO

The Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl, Russia, caught fire following a Ukrainian overnight attack, according to an open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis by ASTRA.

On the night of September 17, Yaroslavl Region Governor Mikhail Yevrayev announced a drone threat in the region and said a Ukrainian attack had been repelled. A section of the M-8 highway at the exit from Yaroslavl toward Moscow was closed, and public transport routes were rerouted. The authorities have not yet reported the consequences of the attack.

After examining a photograph taken by an eyewitness and published by the Exilenova+ Telegram channel, an ASTRA OSINT analyst identified the facility on fire as the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery.

PJSC Slavneft-YANOS processes around 15 million tonnes of crude oil annually and ranks among Russia’s five largest oil refineries. Its product range includes Euro-5 standard gasoline and diesel fuel, aviation kerosene and jet fuel, a wide range of lubricants, bitumen, paraffin-wax products, aromatic hydrocarbons, liquefied gases and fuel oil.

The refinery is the main processing asset of vertically integrated PJSC NGK Slavneft, 99.7% of whose shares are controlled on a parity basis by PJSC Rosneft and PJSC Gazprom.

The facility has previously been targeted by Ukrainian strikes on multiple occasions and caught fire at least eight times in 2026 — on March 28, April 26, May 8, May 22, July 6, July 16, August 6 and August 28.

Following a large-scale attack on Yaroslavl on August 28, one person was killed, and another 27 were injured, according to the regional governor.
