Media: Republicans unite for Trump's 100-day agenda ahead of US elections
Senate and House Republicans are positioning themselves for unified GOP control of the White House and Congress in the upcoming election by developing a comprehensive agenda for Donald Trump's first 100 days.
It includes swiftly enacting a significant budget reconciliation package to deliver on his promise of substantial tax cuts, Caliber.Az reports per The Hill.
Recent discussions among prominent Republican leaders—including Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky), Senate GOP Whip John Thune (South Dakota), Speaker Mike Johnson (Louisiana), and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (Louisiana)—have centred on their legislative agenda for 2025, dependent on a successful Election Day for the party.
Speaker Johnson has expressed his intention to seek reelection if the Republicans retain control of the House, maintaining regular contact with Trump as the election approaches. Scalise, a strong supporter of Trump, has also been in discussions about the GOP presidential nominee's key priorities for the coming year.
Furthermore, GOP policymakers are considering funding a major new border security initiative, likely aimed at completing Trump’s signature border wall and potentially defunding parts of the government that Trump’s supporters argue have been “weaponised” under the Biden administration.
Meanwhile, European diplomats are reportedly preparing for potential sanctions on Russia, as concerns mount that a Trump presidency could undermine Western efforts to isolate Moscow, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Talks among EU officials and envoys are focused on various initiatives to ensure that European sanctions remain in place for the long term, strengthening them through tighter enforcement, even if there is a shift in Washington's approach.
Notably, the 2024 United States presidential election is set for November 5, 2024, with the winning candidate poised to serve a four-year term beginning in January 2025. The president has the authority to enact certain laws independently but primarily collaborates with Congress to pass legislation. In foreign affairs, the president holds significant power in representing the US and shaping its diplomatic policies.
In the Republican Party, former president Donald Trump has secured a commanding lead over his competitors, ultimately becoming the official nominee at the party convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump has selected Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice-presidential running mate.
On the Democratic side, Vice-President Kamala Harris has entered the race following President Joe Biden's withdrawal, with no other Democratic contenders emerging against her. Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.
As the election approaches, the contrasting candidates will likely shape a dynamic political landscape, influencing key legislative priorities and foreign policy directions for the next administration. Voter turnout and engagement will be critical factors in determining the outcome of this pivotal election.
