Media: Russian-linked “African Corps” withdraws from Northern Mali’s Kidal
A military formation known as the “African Corps,” affiliated with Russia’s defense establishment, has announced the withdrawal of its units from the northern Malian city of Kidal, citing coordination with national authorities.
The group said the decision was made jointly with the government of Mali amid what it described as a “difficult” security situation in the region, ASTRA reports.
The statement emphasised that the withdrawal prioritised the evacuation of wounded personnel and heavy equipment.
“First and foremost, wounded servicemen and heavy equipment were evacuated. Personnel continue to carry out their combat mission. The situation in the Republic of Mali remains difficult,” it said.
Earlier reports had been disputed by the Telegram channel Rybary, which is linked to Russian defence circles and initially denied any withdrawal of Russian-affiliated forces from Kidal. In a subsequent update, however, the channel described the movement as a humanitarian evacuation of wounded personnel, claiming that opposing forces allowed the operation after sustaining heavy losses during attempts to storm the camp.
