Media: Trump team weighs pre-emptive airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities
The transition team of the United States' newly elected President, Donald Trump, is reportedly considering military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities in an effort to halt the country’s potential development of nuclear weapons.
Trump’s team is evaluating a range of options, including pre-emptive airstrikes, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Wall Street Journal.
This consideration marks a potential shift from the long-standing policy of addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions through diplomacy and sanctions.
The discussions have gained traction among some members of Trump’s team, especially following developments in Syria. Reports suggest that Iran's weakened regional influence, coupled with growing concerns over its nuclear activities, have ignited intense internal deliberations within the new administration.
Sources indicate that these considerations come in response to recent intelligence about Tehran’s escalating nuclear efforts, further intensifying the sensitivity of the ongoing talks.
Moreover, Trump took part in a 65-minute interview with Time magazine, which has named him its Person of the Year. During the conversation, he was asked about the likelihood of a war with Iran under his potential new administration, to which he responded after a brief pause, according to the magazine.
The magazine also pointed out that Trump was the target of an Iranian assassination plot during the presidential campaign. It further noted that the Iranian regime has been weakened by the ongoing conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's leadership in Syria.
