Media: Unexploded Israeli munitions threaten Gaza civilians returning home
Since October 2023, the Israeli army has used approximately 70,000 tons of various shells and bombs on the territory of the Gaza Strip.
Anne-Claire Yaeesh, Handicap International’s director for the Palestinian territories, said that risks are enormous, Caliber.Az reports citing Royanews.
She noted that unexploded ordnance remaining in the ground and the ruins of destroyed buildings pose an enormous danger to Palestinians who are now returning to their homes in almost all areas of Gaza.
According to an analysis by a specialised UN agency, between 5% and 10% of the bombs and shells dropped by Israeli forces on Gaza failed to detonate.
Humanitarian organisations report that these remnants are severely hindering reconstruction and aid delivery, posing extreme risks to returning civilians and rescue workers.
In some districts, the failure rate is believed to be higher due to the dense infrastructure and repeated strikes that prevent full detonation.
