Minister: Türkiye, Azerbaijan working on new energy projects

06 April 2025 09:40

Türkiye and Azerbaijan are set to deepen their energy partnership with ambitious new projects that aim to expand regional and international cooperation in the sector.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, in an interview with Anadolu Agency, announced that the two countries are exploring the transfer of electricity—especially renewable energy—generated in Azerbaijan to Türkiye via Georgia and the Nakhchivan exclave, Caliber.Az reports.

“Of course, we want to connect this line to the European market,” Bayraktar said, outlining the broader vision of integrating Azerbaijani energy supplies into the European grid.

Bayraktar also revealed that Türkiye will host this year’s meeting of energy ministers from the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), signaling Ankara’s intention to broaden energy cooperation beyond its bilateral ties with Baku. “We plan to transform the ongoing bilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan into multilateral cooperation and thereby expand economic interaction,” he stated.

Highlighting existing strategic infrastructure, Bayraktar praised the Southern Gas Corridor—a network that transports natural gas from the Caspian Sea through Türkiye to Europe—as a globally significant project. He credited its success to the strong political will demonstrated by the leaders of both nations.

“Our goal is to increase the capacity of TANAP from 16 billion to 31 billion cubic meters,” the minister said, referring to the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline, a key component of the Southern Gas Corridor. “Türkiye, as always, is ready to fulfill its role as a major market and natural gas hub.”

Bayraktar also emphasized the global impact of Azerbaijani oil exports via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which runs through Türkiye and serves as a vital route to world markets.
