Minister: Türkiye unable to pay for gas due to sanctions on Russia
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has said that Türkiye is in talks with the US to resolve the payment issues for natural gas imports from Russia.
"Of course, the decision regarding sanctions will affect Türkiye. If we are unable to make payments, we cannot purchase gas. In 2023, sanctions were imposed on Iran, but an exception was made for natural gas from that country. We also want the US to make a similar exception for Russian natural gas," the Turkish minister said, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
On November 21, the US Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against one of Russia's biggest banks, Gazprombank. Starting from November 23, UnionPay cards issued by Gazprombank are no longer accepted by banks in Türkiye.
