Moscow avoids early judgments on Geneva talks outcome

18 February 2026 14:20

The Russian delegation participating in negotiations on Ukraine in Geneva is providing interim reports directly to President Vladimir Putin, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

“Of course, direct reports are being delivered to the president,” Peskov noted. “But it is still too early to speak about any assessments.”

The US-mediated negotiations have entered their second day. Russia is represented by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky. Peskov declined to answer journalists’ questions about whether a possible meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy was being discussed during the Geneva talks.

“The negotiations are continuing for a second day. If there is any information, our chief negotiator in Geneva, Vladimir Medinsky, will share it with you. For now, it would hardly be appropriate to discuss what has been addressed. We need to wait for this round to conclude,” he said.

Peskov also urged caution against speculating about the outcome of negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding Iran’s nuclear program, including oversight of enriched uranium stockpiles.

“We had an initiative and stated our readiness to accept enriched uranium — this was discussed. Everything else is a matter for talks between the Iranians and the Americans. Negotiations are ongoing, so it would be incorrect to anticipate their results,” Peskov explained while commenting on reports about a US proposal to place uranium under control in the Middle East.
