Moscow, Yerevan consider new consular missions

06 August 2026 10:48

Russia and Armenia are continuing discussions on opening new consular missions, including a Russian consulate general in the Armenian city of Kapan and an Armenian consular office in Vladikavkaz, a Russian Foreign Ministry official said.

Bagir Mamiev, head of the ministry’s representative office in Vladikavkaz, said the proposals remain under consideration, but no timeline has been set.

“As of today, this issue (the opening of an Armenian consular office in Vladikavkaz — ed.), as well as the issue of opening a Russian consulate general in Kapan (Armenia), has not been removed from the bilateral agenda, but it is premature to speak about any specific timelines,” Mamiev told RIA Novosti.

He added that the Foreign Ministry’s office in Vladikavkaz maintains regular working contacts with Armenia’s consulate general in Rostov-on-Don, including on issues involving Armenian freight carriers at the Verkhny Lars checkpoint.

The crossing remains the only overland route connecting Russia to Georgia and further to Armenia, making it a key logistical corridor for bilateral trade and transport.
