MP: Iran keeps internet restricted over unrest fears
Iranian authorities are maintaining restrictions on international internet access during the ongoing war due to concerns it could be used to organise unrest, according to lawmaker Amirhossein Sabeti.
Sabeti said the decision reflects security fears that online platforms could facilitate mobilisation against the state.
“If the internet is fully reopened, some mercenaries, who are also armed, may organise gatherings through these networks,” he said.
He also pointed to previous unrest, referring to the national uprising on Jan. 8 and 9, during which security forces killed thousands of protesters. Sabeti warned that similar events could occur again if internet restrictions are lifted.
According to the lawmaker, the shutdown was ordered by Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and will remain in effect for as long as wartime conditions persist.
