NATO chief welcomes Putin–Trump dialogue as positive development
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has welcomed the recent conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, describing it as a constructive move that restored direct communication between the two sides.
Speaking ahead of a meeting of European Union foreign and defence ministers, Rutte said the re-establishment of dialogue was a step in the right direction and praised the United States for its role in addressing the issue, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He also noted that Trump’s subsequent call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was another encouraging sign.
Rutte attended the EU meeting in his regular capacity as a guest, continuing his involvement in discussions on European security.
Note that, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone for over two hours, discussing the war in Ukraine and the prospect of peace negotiations. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the conversation as "candid and comprehensive," confirming that both leaders agreed to keep communication open.
Trump later posted on Truth Social that talks between Russia and Ukraine on a potential ceasefire would begin "immediately," calling the exchange "excellent." He added that Russia was eager to pursue trade with the US post-war and suggested future economic cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv.
Trump claimed to have briefed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European and NATO leaders, and even the Pope on the conversation. However, no official responses have been issued from those parties. The call highlights Trump’s continued diplomatic ambitions despite being a private citizen and Republican frontrunner for the 2024 US presidential election.
