NATO launches “Baltic Sentry” operation to shield undersea infrastructure

14 January 2025 17:54

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, alongside Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, co-hosted a summit of Baltic Sea Allies on January 14, marking a major step in strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure

The summit, held in Helsinki, saw the announcement of the launch of NATO’s new military initiative, “Baltic Sentry,” designed to enhance the Alliance’s military presence in the Baltic Sea and improve the collective response to destabilizing acts, Caliber.Az reports referencing NATO.

In his remarks, Rutte highlighted the growing concern over the safety of undersea infrastructure following recent incidents of sabotage that damaged energy and communication cables. Despite these threats, he expressed confidence in NATO’s ability to safeguard critical infrastructure.

“By working together with all Allies, we will do what it takes to ensure the safety and security of not only our critical infrastructure but of all that we hold dear,” said Rutte.

The “Baltic Sentry” operation will involve a range of military assets, including frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and new technologies such as a fleet of naval drones. NATO also plans to integrate national surveillance assets to bolster its capacity to respond swiftly to any threats.

The initiative will operate within the Critical Undersea Infrastructure Network, collaborating with industry partners to explore further ways to enhance resilience and security for underwater assets.

During the summit, Rutte emphasized the importance of robust enforcement of security measures, drawing attention to Finland’s recent successes in taking firm action within the law.

He stated that ship captains who pose a threat to infrastructure could face severe consequences, including boarding, impounding, and arrest.
