Netherlands strikes deal to boost North Sea gas production
In a move aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on imported gas, the Dutch government has reached an agreement with oil companies to increase gas production in the North Sea.
The government confirmed the deal in an official statement. The agreement, which includes Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) and the industry association Element NL, focuses on the responsible extraction of remaining natural gas reserves in the North Sea, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
The goal is to increase gas production efficiency at existing gas fields. This initiative is expected to not only decrease the Netherlands’ dependency on foreign gas imports but also contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with energy consumption.
Sophie Hermans, the Netherlands' Minister for Climate Policy and Green Growth, emphasised the importance of energy independence, stating, “In an increasingly unstable world, it is crucial that we take responsibility for our own energy supply. This agreement helps us move forward with less reliance on other countries, lower emissions, and a future-focused approach."
