No country considers four villages as Armenian territory Pundit highlights challenges in Gazakh district issue

16 April 2024 15:41

Armenian political analyst Areg Kochinyan has shed light on the complex dynamics surrounding the status of four villages in Azerbaijan's Gazakh district, emphasizing that no country in the world recognizes them as Armenian territory.

Speaking to Armenian media, Kochinyan outlined the challenges and considerations at play in the ongoing discussions regarding these villages, Caliber.Az reports.

"Regarding these four villages, I noticed and said the following: that the most important, fundamental element for us should be to avoid escalation on the ground. This is, first of all," Kochinyan remarked, delving into the nuances of the situation.

He elaborated on the concept of "gray zones," describing them as areas with unclear legal status in the realm of international relations. Kochinyan stressed the need to prevent any ambiguity in territorial claims, especially concerning these villages.

"Now there is no country in the world regarding these 4 villages that would recognize them as part of Armenia's territory," Kochinyan emphasized, highlighting the lack of international recognition for Armenian claims to these areas.

Expressing concerns about potential escalations, Kochinyan outlined two scenarios currently at play. The first scenario involves Armenia accepting the requirement to bring these villages into the process of delimitation and demarcation, which has been ongoing since November 9, 2020.

"The second scenario: Azerbaijan is not talking about any map, it says that it is putting it before us as an ultimatum that either we return these four villages or hostilities will start," Kochinyan explained, outlining the heightened tensions surrounding the issue.

Kochinyan also called for a comprehensive examination of the consequences of various actions, urging a realistic assessment of the situation. He cautioned against repeating past mistakes and emphasized the need to consider the broader implications of potential courses of action.

In conclusion, the pundit highlighted the importance of acknowledging the existing realities and avoiding approaches that could harm Armenia's interests.
