No discussion on easing sanctions in US-Russia talks, says US special rep
In recent talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of easing anti-Russian sanctions was not on the agenda, said US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.
Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg TV, Witkoff clarified that while sanctions were not addressed during the discussions, they remain an issue to be revisited once a ceasefire agreement is reached in Ukraine, Caliber.Az informs.
"We will definitely get to a ceasefire. After that, all other aspects, including the easing of sanctions and other details, will become secondary in the context of a comprehensive peace agreement," Witkoff stated.
He emphasized that sanctions were not brought up by President Trump during the talks and noted that the discussion is still forthcoming. "The president did not raise the topic of sanctions yesterday. This is a conversation we still need to have, and all parties are open to it," he added.
In response to questions regarding the possibility of resuming energy supplies through Russian pipelines, including the Nord Stream, Witkoff indicated a positive outlook, saying, "I can indeed imagine such a scenario."
He also commented on the current situation of Russian oil exports, noting that while Russian oil is being sold to China at lower prices, this approach is not ideal from an economic standpoint.
The possibility of sanction relief and resumption of energy exports remains a key issue as international diplomatic efforts continue.
On March 18, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a significant phone conversation aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The call lasted approximately 90 minutes and focused on efforts to establish a ceasefire.
During the discussion, President Putin agreed to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for a 30-day period. However, he did not commit to a comprehensive ceasefire and insisted that Ukraine cease receiving foreign military aid, a condition that complicates potential peace negotiations.
