Spain's Olga Carmona learned of her father's death after scoring the only goal in the FIFA Women's World Cup 1-0 final win over England.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Sunday (20 August) that her father had been battling a long illness and passed away on Friday.
Carmona's goal in the 29th minute secured her country's first ever World Cup title.
"I know you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad," wrote the Spanish captain on social media after finding out about the tragic news.
"And without knowing it, I had my star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique", she said adding a picture that shows her kissing the World Cup winner's medal.
According to Spanish media outlet Relevo Carmona's family and friends decided not to tell her the news before the final so that she could concentrate on the most important game of her career.
The Real Madrid left back played a pivotal role in Spain's triumph starting five of seven World Cup games.
"We send our most sincere embrace to Olga and her family in a moment of deep sorrow. We love you, Olga, you are Spanish soccer history," the Spanish FA wrote on social media.
