Pashinyan hails new regional perspective as historic win for Armenia and Azerbaijan

10 December 2025 10:53

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasised the historic significance of upcoming elections, describing them as a pivotal opportunity for both Armenia and the wider region to enter a new phase in their history.

In remarks conveyed by Armenian media and cited by Caliber.Az, Pashinyan highlighted the potential for establishing lasting peace and strengthening regional statehood, independence, and sovereignty.

“The upcoming elections are very important because, in my view, they represent a historic opportunity for our country and, by the way, for our region to enter a completely new stage in our history,” Pashinyan said.

He explained that the current situation offers an unprecedented chance to secure a durable peace and pointed to the importance of shared interests among the countries of the region as a key factor behind the recent agreement.

“Indeed, we now have an unprecedented opportunity to establish lasting peace. This is particularly important for the protection and strengthening of statehood, independence, and sovereignty in the countries of our region. When people ask why this agreement has become possible now and not several years ago, there are many factors, but I believe one of the most important factors influencing this agreement is the mutual understanding of common interests among the countries of our region,” he said.

Pashinyan recalled the historical context of the region, noting the independence of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. “In a sense, this was a completely new situation, but not an entirely new understanding of what had happened or is happening,” he said.

He stressed that the key element behind the current peace and agreement is a “new understanding,” describing it as a unique perspective that allows the countries of the region to become more independent, sovereign, and secure.

“Today, I believe the most important factor in this peace, in this agreement, is the new understanding—a new perspective for our region, a new awareness that truly creates an unprecedented situation. We can rely on this to make our countries more independent, more sovereign, and more secure,” Pashinyan stated.

The Prime Minister emphasised that the achievement is shared not only between Armenia and Azerbaijan but also within the context of domestic politics.

“However, I consider this a shared achievement for both Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as a very important accomplishment from the perspective of our domestic politics,” he said.

Pashinyan further highlighted the role of his political team in navigating difficult times leading to this milestone.

“This is an achievement for the Civil Contract Party and our political team, and I am very glad that we were able to get through these very difficult times—so to speak, through hell—and reach this point,” he concluded.
