Peskov: Russia hopes to resume trilateral Ukraine talks with US

Moscow hopes to resume trilateral negotiations with Ukraine and the United States in the near future, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestia on September 11.

“We remain open to negotiations. We hope that, as was discussed with the American negotiators, in the foreseeable future we will be able to meet again as three parties and continue the dialogue,” Peskov said.

He cautioned, however, that it was difficult to predict what such a meeting might achieve, saying the “situation on the ground” was worsening for Ukraine.

Asked about the prospects of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, Peskov said that if such a summit were arranged, it would probably be difficult for anyone to derail it.

“Trump has his own vision, he has his own relationship with Putin, and it is unlikely that anyone can influence this,” Peskov said.

Peskov said there were currently no concrete plans for future negotiations, although “over time, this will probably come to pass.”

The latest trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States were held in Abu Dhabi on January 23–24 and February 4–5, followed by a meeting in Geneva on February 17–18.
