PM Kobakhidze: Georgia readies for any scenario in US relations

04 April 2025 16:02

Georgia is calmly awaiting developments concerning the future of its relations with the United States, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has stated.

Speaking to reporters on April 4, Kobakhidze highlighted that the country is ready for any potential outcome, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

"Regarding our future relations with the United States, we will see how things unfold. There are two scenarios. The first is that President Donald Trump defeats the 'Deep State,' which would be a favourable scenario for us. However, if that doesn't happen, there is a risk that relations with Georgia could continue as they have over the past four years. We are prepared for both scenarios," he said.

Kobakhidze reassured that Georgia had already planned for the worst-case scenario — the continuation of the previous US administration's policies. "We are calmly awaiting developments. Ahead of the US presidential elections, we had accounted for the possibility of the previous administration's continuation. We were ready for that. In any case, nothing could undermine our sovereignty and independence," he added.

The prime minister also pointed out that the current US administration is echoing the same sentiments about the previous US leadership that Georgia's own authorities have expressed over the last four years.

Under the previous administration, the US imposed financial sanctions on the Georgian government, suspended bilateral military cooperation, and introduced visa restrictions, citing Georgia's perceived backslide from democratic values.

Georgia's government remains firm in its commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty amid these external pressures.
