Political analyst: Armenian PM dangerous not only for Armenia, but also for its neighbours

13 February 2024 12:52

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is dangerous not only for Armenia, but also for its neighbours.

“Pashinyan’s political behaviour creates a problem with security not only for Armenia, but also for the region and other countries,” Head of the Centre for European Studies of Yerevan State University, candidate of political sciences, associate professor Vladimir Martirosyan told the Armenian media, Caliber.Az reports.

The political analyst noted that unpredictability, especially in relation to neighbours in the field of security, has been stipulated by the lack of clarity and clear principles put forward by the Armenian leader. This hampers foreign policy partners to predict his behaviour in various security situations. Foreign policy partners listen to Pashinyan, but see him as a potential threat to the security of their countries.

“In other words, Armenia, which appears to be a security and logistics partner for Iran and Russia, may be influenced to make political maneuvers to retain power by Pashinyan, which will create a difficult situation for Russia and Iran in terms of balancing regional interests,” he noted.

“I think that after the elections the situation will change. After the Russian presidential elections, Russia will determine the vector of its foreign policy. Russia will start talking to Armenia openly, without reservations. I am aware of the mentality of Russian politics and I can say that Russians never forget those who do not behave like partners in difficult situations,” Martirosyan said.

“Unfortunately, Armenia's foreign policy over the past two years testifies to this. The Russians will not forget this and will remember it. During this period Russia will not take very decisive steps. Russia has made it clear that these diplomatic disputes will continue. Russia will wait until Pashinyan takes the decisive steps that he previously took. That is, he will declare that Armenia is pursuing a policy of withdrawing from security formats with Russia, freezing relations in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and that Armenia has already changed the vector of foreign policy,” the political analyst added.
