President Biden greenlights November strikes on IRGC targets in Syria
US President Joe Biden authorized military strikes against facilities in Syria used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated groups on two occasions in November 2024.
The strikes, carried out on November 11 and November 26, targeted key infrastructure such as command centres, weapons storage, and training facilities.
In a letter to Congress, Biden confirmed that these operations were in response to attacks on US personnel and facilities in Syria, which had endangered American lives and threatened the security of US forces operating in the region. The strikes were deemed necessary to protect US personnel and advance national security objectives, Caliber.Az reports.
“I directed United States forces to conduct discrete strikes on November 11, 2024, and on November 26, 2024, against facilities in Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militia groups for headquarters and command and control, weapons storage, training, logistics support, and other purposes,” Biden wrote.
The letter emphasized that the military actions were consistent with the president’s constitutional duties as commander-in-chief and were conducted to safeguard American interests in the Middle East. The document further outlined the broader context of US counterterrorism efforts in Syria, where American forces continue to partner with local security forces to counter ISIS and other terrorist threats.
