Poland thwarts sanctions-busting equipment shipment to Russia
Poland’s Internal Security Agency, together with the National Tax Administration, has prevented an attempt to illegally transfer strategically significant equipment to Russia.
According to RMF FM, the agencies announced the operation on Wednesday, February 25.
On February 18, authorities detained five suspects accused of attempting to export equipment used in the manufacture of integrated circuits in violation of sanctions regulations. The group consisted of four Belarusian nationals and one Polish citizen.
Investigators said the suspects intended to send specialised equipment to Russia via Belarus, which was to be used as a transit corridor. Operational actions by law enforcement officers allowed the vehicle carrying the equipment to be located before transportation began, thereby preventing the shipment.
Prosecutors have charged the detainees with aiding Russia’s military activities against Ukraine and attempting to circumvent international sanctions.
If convicted, the suspects face prison sentences of up to three years.
On February 20, the Łódź District Court ordered three of the defendants to remain in custody for three months. The remaining suspects were placed under less restrictive measures, including bail, police supervision, and a prohibition on leaving the country.
