Pro-Armenian US Congressman Pallone joins COP29, demonstrating Azerbaijan’s open dialogue

16 November 2024 14:58

Congressman Frank Pallone has arrived in Baku to participate in the COP29 climate conference, underscoring the event's global significance and Azerbaijan's commitment to inclusive dialogue.

In a post on his social media platform X, Pallone reaffirmed his dedication to climate action, stating: “The United States must remain a leader in the global fight against the worsening climate crisis. More than ever, I look forward to attending the COP29 climate conference to demonstrate that America is still in this fight.”

Pallone, a prominent pro-Armenian advocate in the US, known for his close ties to Armenian lobbying groups alongside fellow lawmakers like Adam Schiff and Bob Menendez, has long been a vocal critic of Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports.

His participation in the COP29 conference, despite his political stance, highlights the event's inclusivity and Baku’s commitment to fostering open dialogue with all parties.

In a related context, before the start of COP29, Pallone led a group of 60 pro-Armenian US lawmakers in sending a letter to the US State Department, urging the US to hold Azerbaijan accountable for alleged “war crimes, hostage-taking, and the illegal occupation of Armenian territory.”

In response to the letter, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, remarked: “It’s no secret that many of the signatories [of the letter to the State Department] are in close contact with Armenian lobbying groups in the United States. Some members of Congress, likely preparing for elections, may need financial support and votes from the Armenian lobby.”

He also criticized the use of the climate summit as a political tool, saying, “Turning COP into a political instrument and campaigning against countries is wrong. This is an attempt to divert attention from the main goals of fighting climate change. Climate change is a global issue that concerns the entire world.”

Hajiyev emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to making COP29 a success: “Azerbaijan is doing everything possible to turn the upcoming COP29 conference into a success story, working with like-minded countries for the sake of our planet and advancing the global climate agenda.”

Pallone’s visit to Baku, despite his vocal political position, serves as a testament to COP29’s spirit of inclusion, showcasing Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to engage the international community and promote meaningful climate action.
