Putin supports Volodin’s nomination for another term as Duma speaker

United Russia Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has proposed Vyacheslav Volodin for another term as chairman of Russia’s State Duma, with President Vladimir Putin backing the nomination.

“I discussed this issue with the head of our state, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. Vladimir Vladimirovich believes that Vyacheslav Volodin can successfully continue in this position. I support this proposal and propose nominating Vyacheslav Viktorovich for this position,” Medvedev said.

Irina Yarovaya has been proposed as first deputy chairman of the lower house. The proposed deputy speakers are Vladimir Vasilyev, Alexander Zhukov, Anna Kuznetsova, Viktoria Abramchenko, Alexey Gordeyev and Vitaly Savelyev.

Volodin has served as State Duma speaker since 2016, when Putin proposed his candidacy and United Russia backed it. Contemporary reporting from that period confirms that Putin and Medvedev supported Volodin’s nomination.

In March 2026, sources cited by Vedomosti reported that Vasilyev could move to the deputy speaker’s post in the next parliamentary convocation. In July, Volodin was registered as a candidate in Saratov single-member constituency No. 164.

In the September 18–20 parliamentary elections, Volodin received 83.87% of the vote in the constituency, according to the figures cited in the source text.

The proposed leadership lineup comes as the newly elected State Duma prepares to begin work. Volodin’s nomination would extend his tenure as speaker into another parliamentary convocation.
