Putin tells Trump Russia, US share responsibility as world's largest nuclear powers
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia and the United States, as the world's two largest nuclear powers, share a special responsibility for maintaining global security and stability, in a message to U.S. President Donald Trump marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
According to the Kremlin, Putin made the remarks in a congratulatory message sent on July 4 to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, Caliber.Az reports.
In his message, Putin described the Declaration of Independence as a landmark event that marked not only the birth of the United States but also "a significant milestone in world history."
He said Russia had "unconditionally supported the North American colonists in their struggle for freedom from British rule" and highlighted periods of cooperation between Moscow and Washington, including their alliance during the two world wars.
"We were allies in two world wars, together we freed humanity from the horrors of Nazism, and then played a vital role in laying the foundations of the modern world order," Putin said.
Putin also expressed confidence that "constructive, equal and mutually beneficial" relations between Moscow and Washington would benefit both nations as well as the wider international community.
