Putin to reopen historic Azerbaijani theatre in Derbent after reconstruction
Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to officially reopen the building of the Azerbaijan State Musical and Drama Theatre in Derbent on March 27 via video conference, following its reconstruction.
According to TASS, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced the event to journalists, noting that it coincides with World Theatre Day.
“Via videoconference, the president will today open the building of the Azerbaijan State Musical and Drama Theatre in Derbent after its reconstruction,” Peskov said, emphasising that the venue is a historic theatre with roots dating back to the 19th century.
He explained that the theatre originated from a cultural circle established by members of the Azerbaijani intelligentsia in Derbent, which later developed into an Azerbaijani theatre.
“Representatives of the Azerbaijani intelligentsia in Derbent once created such a cultural circle, which later became an Azerbaijani theatre. By the way, guests from Azerbaijan will be in Derbent today on the occasion of the opening of such an important cultural site,” Peskov added.
