Putin, Trump set to meet in Hungary within two weeks, Kremlin confirms
A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could take place within the next two weeks, with both sides agreeing that it “should not be postponed”.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained that the choice of Hungary reflects mutual agreement between the parties, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“This is a bilateral process in determining the venue,” Peskov said, noting that each side contributes proposals for organising the talks.
He emphasised that Budapest was selected due to its unique position within NATO and the EU, as Hungary demonstrates sovereignty and independence in defending its interests, earning respect from global leaders.
When asked whether yesterday’s conversation removed the threat of Tomahawk missile deliveries to Ukraine, Peskov stated, “The position of the Russian side was clearly articulated by President Putin; there should be no doubt about it.”
Following a productive phone call on October 16, 2025, Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed to meet in Budapest within two weeks to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.
Hungary was chosen as the venue due to its unique position within NATO and the EU, demonstrating sovereignty and independence in defending its interests.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán confirmed Hungary's readiness to host the summit, emphasising the country's pro-peace stance and opposition to Western military and financial support for Ukraine.
Despite an outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Putin, Hungary pledged to facilitate his entry and exit, citing plans to withdraw from the ICC.
