Qatar launches talks with Iran to help end ongoing conflict

Doha has begun engaging in diplomatic efforts with Iran, as a Qatari delegation of negotiators arrived in Tehran on Friday, May 21, to support efforts aimed at ending the ongoing military conflict and addressing unresolved issues.

According to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters, the visit was coordinated with the United States, indicating a broader diplomatic alignment behind the initiative.

The talks are intended to help secure an agreement to halt the war involving Iran while also facilitating discussions on outstanding points of contention.

Doha has previously played a mediating role in several high-profile conflicts, including the war in the Gaza Strip, as well as in other areas marked by international tensions. However, it had until now avoided assuming a mediation role in the current conflict involving Iran.

This reluctance followed recent hostilities in which Qatar itself was targeted by Iranian missile and drone strikes, underscoring the sensitivity of its renewed diplomatic engagement.
