Revanchists marching to Armenian Investigative Committee More police officers deployed

03 June 2024 11:52

The movement of Armenian revanchists “Tavush for the Motherland” marched from the Arabkir Surb Khach Church in Yerevan to the building of the Armenian Investigative Committee on June 3.

Additional police officers have already been deployed, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.

Before the procession, the leader of the movement, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, noted that the rally participants had demands that they intended to voice to the representatives of the Investigative Committee.

He added that all decisions in Armenia are made by one person, and everyone knows this. According to the archbishop, officials may not comply with the whims of the authorities.

Galstanyan noted that foreign ambassadors most likely see everything, but remain silent, proceeding from the agreements with the Armenian authorities.

“It’s so strange the US ambassador to Armenia visits the Interior Ministry when we are protesting here, talks about police reforms, allocation of huge funds meanwhile 40 police officers beat one person. It is hypocrisy, isn’t it? What reforms are they talking about? Previously, three police officers beat one, but now 40 police officers beat one. Is this a reform?” the archbishop said.

He noted that diplomats supporting the movement will visit embassies and offices of international organisations from June 3.

MP from the Armenian opposition faction “I Have the Honour” Tigran Abrahamyan noted that during his entire parliamentary activity, he had not seen such aggression from the policemen.

In particular, he visited the detainees in the pre-trial detention centre; almost all of them were injured.

“It is necessary to file criminal cases rather than to conduct an official investigation. Offences have been committed and they must be investigated,” the MP said.

The revanchist movement held a rally near the building of the Armenian Foreign Ministry on May 31, demanding to hold a meeting with the minister.

The ministry refused to hold a meeting with the protesters, and they demanded to enter the building.

The police officers who cordoned off the ministry did not allow the protesters to enter the building.

Later, the rally turned into clashes between security forces and protesters. Law enforcement officers detained dozens of people. The Investigative Committee announced that 28 people were detained.
