Romania to donate Patriot missile system to Ukraine
Spokesman for the Romanian government Mihai Constantin has announced that the government approved a bill for the donation of a Patriot missile defence system to Ukraine on September 2.
"This legislative proposal will be sent to Parliament for urgent review and approval," he said, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
"The executive branch has approved and will submit as urgent a bill amending Law 222/2017 on land-based air defence to the parliament. Specifically, the bill provides that the Patriot missile defence system will be subject to donation to third parties," he added.
The Romanian Defence Ministry's bill states that Romania will transfer a modern Patriot missile system to Ukraine, which it received from the US. Romania is set to receive a total of seven Patriot systems, of which four are already in the country and two are already operational.
The bill also specifies that Bucharest will receive a new air defence system funded by its partners in return. Meanwhile, the parliament must approve additional expenses, including fees and commissions, amounting to approximately $60 million.
