Romanian president casts doubt on Putin’s desire to end war in Ukraine
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has expressed scepticism over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statements suggesting that the war in Ukraine is approaching its conclusion, saying ongoing battlefield developments indicate otherwise.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Bucharest with the President of Poland, Dan said that despite Moscow’s assertions, hostilities continue and Russia’s economic situation remains under strain, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
“But in recent days we have seen that Russia continues to wage war, even though it claims to want to end it,” Dan said.
He added that Russia’s actions do not reflect a genuine willingness to pursue peace in Europe, noting that Western countries are responding through coordination within NATO, the European Union, and bilateral defence cooperation frameworks.
Dan also accused Moscow of conducting hybrid warfare against Western states, saying there are no signs of de-escalation.
“We see that this is continuing, and we observe no signs of any desire for peace,” he added.
Russia has repeatedly said it remains open to negotiations over Ukraine, while continuing military operations. Western governments, however, have maintained that Moscow’s actions are inconsistent with its diplomatic messaging.
