Rosatom confirms commitment to Bushehr nuclear project in Iran

Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom intends to continue work on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant project in Iran, despite ongoing security concerns, according to Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to international organisations in Vienna.

In an interview with Izvestia, Ulyanov said that Russian personnel would return to the Bushehr facility “as soon as the military situation allows,” emphasising that Rosatom remains firmly committed to completing the project.

He also noted that there are currently no substantive discussions within the International Atomic Energy Agency or the United Nations regarding the introduction of additional mechanisms to protect nuclear facilities.

Ulyanov argued that recent developments highlight a broader lack of international consensus on safeguarding such sites. “Ukrainian attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the US-Israeli aggression against Iran and its nuclear facilities have shown that, at this stage, the international community lacks sufficient political will to condemn such attacks and make them impossible,” he said.
