Rubio affirms US support for Hungary, notes challenges in Iran talks
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest that President Donald Trump is ready to assist Hungary if challenges arise.
Rubio highlighted that any economic difficulties, barriers to development, or risks to Hungary’s stability would likely draw President Trump’s attention, due to the nation’s ties with him and its significance to the US, Caliber.Az reports.
“If you face financial struggles, if you face things that are impediments to growth, if you face things that threaten the stability of your country, I know that President Trump would be very interested because of your relationship with him and because of the importance of this country to us,” Rubio noted.
He added that the US wants Hungary to prosper, as it aligns with American national interests. Rubio emphasised that Orbán plays an “irreplaceable role” in the “Board of Peace,” and described US-Hungary relations as entering a “golden era.”
He noted that personal ties between Trump and Orbán during the former president’s second term were key in strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting that leadership relationships remain crucial because “we are still human.”
At the same conference, Rubio also addressed the difficulties of negotiating with Iran. He explained that decisions in the country are made by radical Shiite clerics based on theology, making negotiations extremely challenging.
“These people make political decisions on the basis of pure theology. That’s how they make their decisions,” he said, adding that reaching an agreement with Iran is difficult, but they will continue to try.
Rubio’s remarks underscored US support for Hungary while signalling a cautious approach toward talks with Tehran.
