Russian authorities have formally brought charges in absentia against former chess champion Garry Kasparov, who is listed as an extremist and terrorist and has been designated a foreign agent by the Russian Ministry of Justice.
The Zamoskvoretsky Court in Moscow has received a request to impose pretrial measures against Kasparov, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
He is accused of publicly advocating for and justifying terrorism. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of up to seven years.
Kasparov, a former world chess champion, has previously been subjected to multiple administrative penalties in Russia for alleged violations of the country’s foreign agent legislation.
