Russia claims all AZAL crash matters settled with Azerbaijan

29 June 2026 16:23

Russia and Azerbaijan have resolved all issues related to the aftermath of the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) passenger aircraft on December 25, 2024, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said in an interview with RTVI.

Asked whether the issue of compensation had been fully settled and all payments completed, Galuzin said the matter had been resolved but declined to provide further details.

“You know, we have resolved all issues related to the consequences of the crash of the Azerbaijani airliner. But these issues concern specific people who have endured a terrible tragedy and suffered an irreparable loss. Therefore, I would honestly prefer not to go into details here,” Galuzin told RTVI.

The Embraer 190 operated by Azerbaijan Airlines was flying from Baku to Grozny when it crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau on December 25, 2024. There were 67 people on board; 38 were killed, and 29 survived.

On April 15, 2026, the foreign ministries of Russia and Azerbaijan issued a joint statement saying the crash occurred “as a result of the unintentional action of an air defence system in the airspace of the Russian Federation” and that the two sides had “reached an appropriate settlement of the consequences, including the issue of compensation payments.”
