Russia condemns vandalism of Mother Armenia memorial in Gyumri
Russia’s Embassy in Armenia has expressed strong outrage over the vandalism of the Mother Armenia memorial in Gyumri, which is dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, describing the incident as a deliberate attack on shared historical memory.
“We received with deep indignation reports of the desecration of the Mother Armenia Memorial in Gyumri, dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. This sacrilegious act cannot be regarded as ordinary vandalism. It is a deliberate attack on our shared historical memory and an attempt to desecrate the Great Victory,” the embassy said in a statement published on its Telegram channel.
The Russian Embassy in Yerevan said it expects a clear response from the Armenian authorities regarding the incident. “We see a strong rejection of what happened from the city authorities and the public in Gyumri. We expect a clear assessment of the incident from Armenia’s official authorities, as well as comprehensive measures to bring those responsible to justice and prevent similar provocations in the future,” the statement added.
On June 10, reports emerged that unidentified individuals had torn off gilded letters bearing the names of Hero Cities of the Great Patriotic War from the Mother Armenia memorial in the Armenian city of Gyumri.
