Russia expresses readiness to support Azerbaijan-Armenia peace treaty
Russia has expressed its willingness to support the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, noting its commitment to assist in the signing of a long-awaited treaty between the two nations.
Speaking to journalists on July 24, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow is prepared to offer any necessary support if requested by the parties, Caliber.Az reports per TASS.
“We wish for Baku and Yerevan to reach the signing of the treaty as soon as possible. At the same time, we remain ready, if requested, to provide any assistance to this process,” Peskov said.
The statement comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to finalise a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan holding direct talks on July 10 in Abu Dhabi. The bilateral talks, which took place without international mediators, marked a significant step in direct negotiations aimed at normalising relations and finalising a peace treaty.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed key aspects of the peace process, including the ongoing delimitation of the 1,000-kilometre border and the establishment of the Zangezur Corridor — a proposed transport link connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave.
Both parties agreed to begin preparations for the initialling of a peace agreement, building on a draft framework outlined earlier this year. The talks were described as constructive, though several contentious issues remain unresolved.
Among the outstanding matters, Baku has called on Yerevan to amend its constitution to eliminate territorial claims and to formally disassociate from the OSCE Minsk Group — an international mediation format Azerbaijan considers obsolete.
