Russia imposes temporary movement restrictions near Estonian border

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has introduced temporary movement restrictions in two districts along the border with Estonia, citing the need to prevent violations of border and migration rules and protect aquatic biological resources.

The restrictions are in effect from September 16 to 26 in the border areas of the Slantsy and Kingisepp districts in the Leningrad region, according to Estonian media.

The move has also raised speculation about a possible new mobilisation in Russia. Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro did not rule out the possibility that the measures could be linked to a planned mobilisation, noting that there had been various speculations about a new call-up.

Taro added that Russia itself knows why it has introduced the measures, while noting that special restrictions in the country’s border zone have long been in place and that the area has never been freely accessible.
