Russia, Iran coordinate UN efforts to lift sanctions on Tehran
Russia and Iran are coordinating efforts at the United Nations aimed at the eventual lifting of international sanctions imposed on Tehran, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov.
Speaking to Izvestia, Alimov said the two countries are working jointly on initiatives within the UN framework and are actively discussing what Moscow describes as “unilateral coercive measures.”
Alimov said that discussions are ongoing regarding the inadmissibility of unilateral coercive measures. The diplomat explained that work is already underway and that Russia is cooperating with Iran on this issue at the UN.
“We will see how this will be implemented,” Alimov said. “We (the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter) advocate the implementation of the principles and provisions of the UN Charter in international relations. And, of course, if these agreements between the United States and Iran are signed and implemented, in fact, this will mean the fulfilment of the requirements of the Group in Defence of the UN Charter,” Alimov added.
