Russia plans expanded military training in schools

Russia is preparing to introduce expanded basic military training into the curriculum for older school students and vocational colleges.

The proposed course would be taught in grades 9–11 and in community colleges, with a total of 64 academic hours per year—nearly double the time currently allocated to the subject known as “Fundamentals of Homeland Security and Defence," Caliber.Az reports via Russian media. 

The initiative was discussed at a forum held at Patriot Park, attended by representatives from educational and military institutions.

Course materials are expected to be developed jointly by Synergy University, the Defence Ministry’s Avangard training centre, and DOSAAF, a state-linked organisation that promotes military and technical training.

According to Synergy University President Vadim Lobov, the new subject could be introduced on a pilot basis as early as the upcoming academic year in several regions, although no specific locations have been disclosed.

The curriculum is expected to include drill exercises, firearms training, first aid, navigation, and emergency response. Officials also say it will incorporate a “historical and patriotic component.” Larisa Sulima, First Deputy Minister of Education of the Moscow region, argued that such content is necessary, citing what she described as the effectiveness of Western intelligence activities against Russia.

However, critics have raised concerns about the potential impact of introducing widespread military-style training for teenagers, warning of unclear long-term consequences. No final decision has yet been made on whether the programme will be implemented nationwide.
