Russia preparing for potential confrontation with NATO, defence minister says

16 December 2024 19:19

Russia's Ministry of Defence is making efforts to ensure its full preparedness for a potential military confrontation with NATO, statements by Russian officials say.

Andrei Belousov, Minister of Defence, confirmed at a Ministry board meeting that Russia is taking measures to be ready for any eventuality, including a possible conflict with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

"Ensuring full readiness for any development of the situation in the medium term, including a potential military conflict with NATO in Europe," Belousov remarked, signaling Russia's growing concern over NATO's actions.

Belousov also indicated that such a conflict with NATO could materialize as early as the next decade, referencing decisions made at NATO summits and doctrinal documents that point to this possibility.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who addressed the aforementioned meeting, elaborated on his country’s concerns about NATO, stating that the alliance's goals have expanded far beyond its historical zone of responsibility. He also pointed out that NATO countries are significantly increasing their military budgets and deploying strike groups near Russia's borders, actions that further exacerbate tensions.

Putin emphasized that the West has pushed Russia to a "red line," where failure to respond to its actions is no longer a viable option. He also criticized Western powers for using the Russian threat to incite fear among their populations.
